Abstract

Since the publication in 2002 of our Diccionario etimológico de los sufijos españoles, it is now possible for the first time to classify all Spanish suffixes according to their origins, that is, according to the processes through which they were coined. After reviewing briefly the few works that have been dedicated to the origins of suffixes, and clarifying the distinction between authentic suffixes and nonsuffixal final elements, I offer an etymological classification of the former according to the various genetic categories to which they belong.
