Abstract

Networking is the process of building and sustaining relationships with those who have the potential to assist in one's career or personal goals. Active behavior is a necessity for networking, and this often includes the nurturing of networks both inside and outside one's home institution. Many benefits have been shown to come from effective networking, and much of the literature suggests that networking activity is essential in building a successful career. Networks exist in several different types, each of which offers various kinds of opportunities. In this chapter, we detail the types of networks that one can potentially seek out and draw on throughout one's career. In addition, we offer some useful, practical insights when it comes to improving and developing networking skills.
