Abstract

In addition to its standard direct imaging and multi-object spectroscopy modes, VIMOS offers an option for integral field (3D) spectroscopy using an unprecedentedly large integral field unit Integral-Field Unit (IFU). With a total of 6400 spectracovering a maximum field-of-view (FoV) of 54″×54″, this mode presentssome challenges in terms of data reduction and calibration. Following an introduction and a selected number of illustrative science results obtained from VIMOS-IFU observations, several aspects of data processing and performances are discussed. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
