Abstract

This chapter applies the machinery we have developed in the previous chapters to find generating functions for the distribution of consecutive patterns in permutations and words. The study of patterns in permutations and words has been a very active area of research in recent years, with explosive growth in the years since 1992. A systematic treatment of this subject is found in Kitaev’s Patterns in permutations and words [71].
