The technological advancements of our time and the economic and political dominance of Western societies suggest that success and survival in the world of the future will depend to a large extent on one’s ability to be “literate” in mathematics. Thus, it is possible that mathematical ability will become a criterion for discrimination against a person or a group, being used as a filter into employment and professional development. In this context, taking into account relevant research findings, the socially or culturally “different” persons or groups, particularly in Western societies, will be the most vulnerable.
