Abstract

The article presents author's perspective on open access (OA) publishing and the mission of university presses. The issues of fair use and U.S. copyright law are briefly discussed. University presses that operate on the open-access model include Athabasca University Press in Canada which is located at http://www.aupress.ca and the Open Access Publishing in European Networks or OAPEN consortium which is at http://www.oapen.org. Information is given about OA journal publishing at several U.S. colleges and their academic or digital libraries such as the University of California system's OA policy.
