Abstract

The notion of autopoiesis is explained and it is used as a possible foundation for soft-computing. The fundamental step is centered on the notion of Structural Coupling. Structural coupling, is a mechanism by which a lineage of autopoietic systems can change its structure (i.e. components and processes) in a manner that is congruent with the recurrent perturbations that arise in the medium. We suggest that Structural Coupling, in systems with important levels of temporal correlation, induces anticipatory cognition.
