Abstract

Surgical procedures on the trachea belong to a relatively new part of surgery and have only been undertaken within the past 50 years. Knowledge of the unique blood supply of the trachea and techniques to reduce tension on anastomosis are essential for a successful outcome. Tracheal resection and reconstruction can be safely performed and can have excellent results when special considerations are given to some important steps in the preoperative evaluation and preparation of the patients, to technical aspects of the operation and also to the management of the postoperative care.
