This paper provides an overview of geographical information systems in Germany in terms of their use in a commercial setting, the types of company that use them and the benefits to be gained from the introduction of this technology. An example is drawn from experience at Gelsenwasser where, with the benefit of hindsight, improvements to analysis are also discussed. A more detailed investigation of the geographical information systems technology requirements of a typical water utility highlights the most important aspects and exposes some of the pitfalls. -Authors
