Abstract

This essay analyses some of the principal research themes of rural studies on Latin America during the last two to three decades. The transformations in the rural economy & society engendered by the process of neoliberal globalization & the sociopolitical protests of peasants, indigenous peoples & women against discrimination & neoliberal policies infuse rural studies. The analytical perspective of the "new rurality" is seen by many researchers as the best approach for capturing these changes & designing pro-peasant public policies. Other themes examined here are peasant differentiation, the gap between peasant & capitalist farming, the feminization & flexibilization of rural labor, urban-rural relations, peasant & indigenous movements, agrarian reform & rural poverty.
