Abstract

As a tool for developers, Berkeley DB is so flexible that it is difficult to thoroughly appreciate the implications of different design choices. This book offers a developer's perspective on a number of intriguing design issues in Berkeley DB-based applications. The aim is to help readers understand those design options and make the most informed decisions on which ones to choose under which condition. The Berkeley DB Book offers a practical guide to the intricacies of Berkeley DB, and an in-depth analysis of the complex design issues which are often covered in terse footnotes in the dense Berkeley DB reference manual. This guide explains the technology at a higher level, and also fully explores the internals with generous code and design examples. Berkeley DB is becoming the database of choice for appliance makers and for in-memory cache of large scale applications like search engines and high traffic web sites.
