The term hypertensive emergency is used in reference to several syndromes, characterized by very high blood pressure, that present a serious threat to life and demand immediate therapeutic intervention. Hypertensive encephalopathy and accelerated or malignant hypertension constitute typical emergencies. However, other syndromes, through less common, are equally important. This paper lists the most common hypertensive emergencies encountered in clinical practice.
