Abstract

In recent years the diagnosis of pervasive developmental delay or pervasive developmental delay, not otherwise specified (DSM-IV PDD, NOS) has increased dramatically in referrals of individuals to residential schools and special education classrooms. Individuals with a pervasive developmental delay, not otherwise specified diagnosis are those persons who do not fit all of the criteria for a cluster of diagnoses that are part of a spectrum of disorders that involve developmental delays. This chapter examines pervasive developmental delay and in particular Asperger syndrome. Interventions for these disorders and the question of prevention are examined.
