Abstract

Reviews the book, Reading between the signs: Intercultural communication for sign language interpreters, second edition by A. Mindess (2006).This book is a powerful reminder of the role of culture in our lives and, more importantly, in the field of American Sign Language (ASL)/English interpretation. The book emphasizes the importance of interpreters having a thorough understanding of their own culture, uncommon among Americans, in order to mediate between cultures. This stimulating, thought-provoking book provides new and valuable insights into the thought worlds of Deaf America and mainstream America. Although this book is a must read for its primary audience, the ASL/English sign language interpreter and students of interpreting, many would benefit from reading this book.
