In pregnancy and the puerperium, platelet aggregation is enhanced, certain coagulation factor levels rise, and Protein C and S are reduced. This increases the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH), and in some cases, unfractionated heparin (UFH) are used for venous thromboembolism (VTE)) prophylaxis and therapy in pregnancy.
