Abstract

This introductory chapter provides a short review of the ideas and practical approaches that have led to the present and perceived future development of prenatal gene therapy. It summarizes the advantages and the potential adverse effects of this novel preventive and therapeutic approach to the management of prenatal diseases. It also provides guidance to the range of conditions to which prenatal gene therapy may be applied and to the technical approaches, vectors, and societal/ethical considerations for this newly emerging field of Fetal Medicine. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
