Abstract

Thirteen papers, originally presented at a conference held in Catania, Sicily, in November 1995, examine and analyze existing policies for the allocation and maintenance of cultural heritage. Papers discuss some of the broad principles underlying the economics of cultural heritage (David Throsby); some critical issues in the evaluation of cultural heritage (Bruno S. Frey); the optimization of the use of cultural heritage (Christian Koboldt); the value of cultural heritage (Arjo Klamer); the political economy of rehabilitation in the case of the Benedettini Monastery in Catania (Giacomo Pignataro and Ilde Rizzo); cultural heritage and preservation policies in Italy (Guido Guerzoni); the development of British policy on built heritage preservation (Stephen Creigh-Tyte); features and recent developments of cultural heritage policy in Japan (Yoshimasa Kurabayashi); tax policies and cultural heritage (Dick Netzer); privatization policies in Venice (Gianfranco Mossetto); conserving historic monuments in France (Francoise Benhamou); some proposals for the formation of a European market for arts and culture goods (Francesco Forte); and steps toward a workable heritage policy (Alan Peacock). Contributors are economists. Hutter is at Witten-Herdecke University. Rizzo is at the University of Catania. Index.
