The ribosome, one of the central cellular machines, is responsible for production of all the cellular polypeptides. The 70S ribosome is composed of two subunits, large (50S) and small (30S). Each subunit is built of ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and ribosomal proteins (r-proteins). rRNA, which accounts for two thirds of the ribosome weight, is its main structural and functional component. The main function of the small ribosomal subunit is deciphering genetic information by selecting aminoacyl-tRNAs whose anticodon is complementary to the mRNA codon in the ribosome decoding center.
