Abstract

Rule-based approaches to music creation put the focus on the relationship between logic and music. Can meaningful music be created from rational reasoning? This chapter will discuss some developments of constraint solving systems for computer music from the 1950s until the early 2010s. Without covering the full historic development, we will begin by looking at some pioneering research. The last part of the chapter investigates in more detail the ideas and techniques behind the Cluster Engine, a constraints satisfaction problem solver dedicated to music composition.
