The text below is part of a comparative study between the urban revitalization process of the "Meatpacking District" in New York City, and the urban revitalization projects of Regiāo de Luz, in Sao Paulo, Brazil The article's objectives are to undertake a critical overview of the main urban sociology theories and to reflect about the ways in which comtemporary sociology is being in need ofa revision of its dnitions about what cities are. This analysis considers the processes ofurban revitalization and gentrification, that are becoming morefrequent in cities all over the world.
