Abstract

This chapter looks at four examples of how areas with extreme water scarcity are working to achieve security and sustainability of water supplies. Case studies are described in this comparative study of alternative affordable methods of approaching the need for achieving sustainability in water-scarce regions. A widening and possibly insurmountable gap between water supply and demand is projected to occur in 2030 in four locations: India, China, South Africa and São Paulo, Brazil.
