O corpo fazendo a diferença

Abstract

Este artigo apresenta uma análise comparativa dos livros Making Sex de Thomas Laqueur e The Woman in the Body de Emily Martin. Enquanto o primeiro se debruça sobre a trajetória de elaboração da distinção entre os sexos tal como a concebemos contemporaneamente, a segunda focaliza o corpo feminino visto a partir da ginecologia e da obstetrícia. O objetivo é mostrar como o corpo assume lugares distintos nas elaborações teórico-metodológicas dos dois autores, o que se reflete na construção de perspectivas mais ou menos reducionistas ou com maior ou menor capacidade explicativa. De um lado, uma concepção que leva em conta a historicidade do corpo e a pluricausalidade no processo da distinção entre os sexos; de outro, o corpo como substrato fundamental capaz de determinar uma experiência particular das mulheres.This article provides a comparative analysis of the books Making Sex, by Thomas Laqueur, and The Woman in the Body, by Emily Martin. While Laqueur studies how the distinction between the sexes as we now conceive of it was established, Martin focuses on the female body from the point of view of gynecology and obstetrics. The purpose is to show how the body assumes different places in the authors' respective theoretical/methodological work, as reflected in the construction of more or less reductionist perspectives, with greater or lesser explanatory capacity. On the one hand, a concept considering the body's historicity and the multicausality of the process of distinction between the sexes; on the other, the body as a fundamental substrate capable of determining women's particular experience.
