A general synthetic route to 1,8-dioxo-octahydroxanthenes has been developed using tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulfate in semi-aqueous media. The union of two fragments was accomplished by an efficient and convenient protocol enabling the synthesis of 1,8-dioxooctahydroxanthenes in excellent yields. This method provides several advantages such as simple work-up, environmental friendliness and shorter reaction time along with high yields. ©ARKAT USA, Inc.
