Much accurate information has recently become known about iodine monofluoride (IF). With the information available, it was possible to begin a study of the state-to-state rotational energy transfer (RET) during collisions with noble gases. Ground-state IF (X SIGMA ** plus ) was generated in a flow tube reactor and excited by means of a narrow beam ring dye laser to the B**3 pi (0** plus ) state. The fluorescence from the B yields X transition was observed and was used to determine thermally averaged rate constants and cross-sections for state-to-state RET during collisions with He, Ar, and Kr.
