Abstract

The term confocal microscopy has been applied primarily to instruments using circular field stops (e.g., single pinholes or arrays of pinholes in the illumination and imaging systems). Other aperture shapes can of course be utilized, and the slit is an attractive alternative. In a number of circumstances, the slit aperture confocal system can have advantages over circular aperture systems.
