Abstract

Focuses on psychological perspectives on exceptionality and addresses issues related to classification and assessment. The chapter begins by defining terms and concepts used to label and classify physical, mental, and behavioral differences among individuals. The advantages and potential negative effects of labeling and classification are discussed. The chapter then discusses empirically based taxonomies; co-morbidity of DSM disorders and empirically based syndromes; social skills, self-concept and self-efficacy; and integrated vs segregated educational programs for children with emotional or behavioral disorders or learning disabilities.
