Abstract

Heavy congestion is a major issue in the urban traffic control problem due to the increasing number of vehicles. The main tools to control traffic are the traffic lights at the junctions. Based on the measurement of important traffic properties, the traffic control has to realize an optimal green time distribution for the traffic lights that passes as many vehicles through the network as possible. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2007.
