A development of dynamic neural networks has been to view them as learning state machines (Aleksander and Morton 1993,1995 and Aleksander 1996). This paper formalises ideas previously presented as empirical possibilities in order to show how particular modes of learning influence the capacity of such systems to model their environments which too have been assumed to have the character of a state machine.
