Abstract

This essay explores the benefits and pitfalls of perseverance, and considers the role that it plays within positive education and the well-being journey. Perseverance is a personality trait characterized by sticking with things despite challenge. It is important for achievement and other socially valued outcomes. Persevering through challenges helps build one's character. But tenacity at all costs can become a dangerous weapon of self-destruction. While some students need more perseverance, others need less. The challenge for positive education is to help young people find the right balance between working hard and persisting through challenge with letting go at the right time and enjoying life.
