Abstract

(from the preface) This handbook provides an in-depth examination of the epidemiology, social and behavioral correlates, effective intervention and prevention strategies, and health policies related to women's sexual and reproductive health. The first 9 chapters explore the relationships between how historical, developmental, and social structures such as media portrayals of women, family rearing of female adolescents, religious beliefs, gendered norms, women's sociocultural experiences, and exposure to alcohol and drugs serve to increase women's vulnerability to adverse sexual and reproductive health consequences. The next 10 chapters take a life-span approach to examine an array of women's sexual and reproductive health issues, ranging from body image and eating disorders, HIV/AIDS, breast and cervical cancers, pregnancy, and menopause. Effective intervention strategies are also reviewed in these chapters. The last 4 chapters examine the ethical and legal issues confronted in women's sexual and reproductive health.
