Working effectively with adolescents and young adults requires preparation, training and consistent, mindful awareness of the interaction and messaging. Additionally, having a solid knowledge of adolescent development establishes the foundation for a successful interaction and on-going relationship. Being able to establish expectations and boundaries around the interaction allows the adolescent and caregivers to learn and feel safe and secure in the interaction. This can help them remember what was discussed and then ultimately apply the information to their respective lives and situations. Don’t underestimate the importance of individualizing nutrition guidance and be sure to base it on the science of food and nutrition as well as a thorough and meaningful nutrition assessment.
