The novel family Parachlamydiaceae in the order Chlamydiales was proposed based on signature sequences in the 16S and 23S ribosomal genes. This family comprises obligatory intracellular symbionts of free-living amoebae that are closely related to the medically important Chlamydiaceae. Two genera have been described in the family, represented by Parachlamydia acanthamoebae and Neochlamydia hartmannellae. The obligately intracellular coccoid bacterium UWE25, a symbiont of Acanthamoeba spp., previously identified as being related to Chlamydiae, was subsequently assigned to the family Parachlamydiaceae.
