Abstract

This chapter argues that the idea of nation-building finds its justification within the African worldview and the assumptions that Africans hold. It demonstrates how this supports the imperatives of nation-building in modern Africa. To do this the chapter provides some conceptual clarification and justification by way of articulating the idea of Africa implied and the idea of nationalism applied. Thereafter the chapter demonstrates the notion of applied theory—that is, theory as being something that goes beyond mere assumptions, that can be held to have scientific potential and can be subjected to rational and critical justification. Building on the above, the chapter articulates the theoretical foundations of state nationalism in Africa. It applies the twin methods of expository analysis and intuitive deduction to achieve its purpose.
