Abstract

This paper studies QoS aware layered multi-cast of multimedia data in a lossy network coded by a static network code. The data packets multi-cast from a source to heterogeneous destinations arrive at each destination successfully with some probability. We propose two approaches of resource allocation for layered multi-cast of multimedia contents. By iterative solving of an optimization problem, the first approach gives the most reliable resources to lower layers of multimedia while preserving link capacities for higher layers. The second approach formulates an optimization problem whose objective is to maximize the total network throughput while the transmission reliability of each multimedia layer is guaranteed. Both mathematical analysis using the delta-star transformation and computer simulation are used to evaluate the proposed approaches. The results show that the two approaches can be used to provide respectively reliability and QoS guarantee to transmitted multimedia layers over a lossy network. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
