Understanding the sealing mechanism of the radial lip seal for rotating shafts

Abstract

The design and complex sealing mechanism of elastomeric radial lip seals is examined. Microscopic and macroscopic effects during sealing are discussed. Factors supporting various aspects of the proposed sealing hypothesis are outlined. Research currently being carried out is described together with directions for future work. (P.M.T.)
