A narrative description of the critical care course of two patients with neurodevelopmental disabilities against the background of relevant and recent literature is presented here. We have elaborated upon complex and changing care needs of these individuals and their caregivers in the challenging setting of the intensive care unit. We aim to improve upon the understanding of these complexities so that care can be safer and more meaningful to our patients and their families; and acute care providers for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) can benefit from a concise and empathetic body of information.
