Compared with prior eruptions, lavas following the magnitude 7.5 (Richter scale) earthquake contained distinctly less Ti, K, P, Sr, Zr and Nb with a halved lava-production rate. These data suggest either that part of the system linking a shallow reservoir with the surface remains out of balance or that supply from a mantle source decreased as the volcano moved away from a fixed-source hot spot.-K.F.
