Slovenia achieved its independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1991 after a ten-day armed conflict between the Slovenian territorial defence and police forces, and the Yugoslav People’s Army. These events took place after a declaration of independence was issued 26 June 1991 (Bebler 1992). The armed conflict was followed by diplomatic negotiations under the auspices of the EEC, today’s EU.
