Abstract

The authors of this article have been - and continue to be - in charge of the Catalan project of educational integration of ICT since 1986, when the Department of Education of the Generalitat set up its Educational Computing Programme (Programa d'Informàtica Educativa - PIE) with the objective of boosting computing in Catalan schools, within a framework of political decentralization and educational reform. This article aims to look at the initial period of its endeavour -the decade that goes from 1986 to 1995, from the start of the PIE until the appearance of Internet- with the aim of revising, with the perspective of the years gone by, the intentions and results of decisions taken, and, at the same time its influence in the birth and evolution of an organisational model of educational integration of ICT in Catalonia. © 2004 Springer Science + Business Media, Inc.
