Abstract

This chapter covers the topic of test frameworks. In a broad sense, a test framework is a technology or set of tools that supports automated software testing. Most developers are familiar with one of the code-driven test frameworks, which are commonly referred to as unit testing frameworks. In this chapter, you will learn about the four most popular unit testing frameworks. Another important component to any test framework is the test runner. You will learn about a variety of test runners, from the minimalist runners to those that are well-integrated into Visual Studio. This chapter also provides an overview of the xUnit test pattern and explains how each of the unit testing frameworks discussed fits the pattern.
