Abstract

This chapter examines how cars have revolutionized the mobility of baby boomers and changed the shape of Australia's cities. It describes how the mobility of older people will change going forward and discusses how a lack of mobility can have serious negative impacts on the quality of life of older people. A case study, based on research from Melbourne and regional Victoria, illustrates these impacts. A range of other mobility and access challenges are then identified, and options to address these challenges into the future are discussed.
