Anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) is a histologic diagnosis characterized by malignant transformation of the anal canal (Fig. 1) without invasion below the basement membrane. Other terms used to describe this phenomenon include dysplasia and carcinoma in situ of the anal canal.
