Abstract

Carbohydrate, fat, and protein ultimately provide the energy necessary to maintain body functions at rest and during physical activity. These macronutrients maintain the body's structural and functional integrity. In this chapter, each macronutrient's function, metabolism, and sources in the diet are reviewed. For a more detailed explanation of the roles of these macronutrients, the reader is referred to Chapters 12-14. © 2008 Humana Press.
