Abstract

A corneal disc removed at the time of a perforating corneal graft was studied histochemically in a patient suffering from lipid keratopathy. Cholesterol and total lipids in the blood were normal. The fatty material found in the cornea consisted mainly of cholesterol and neutral fats which were deposited extracellularly. In addition some glycoproteins enveloping the collagen fibers were present. Vascularization and chronic non specific inflammation were regarded as the basic changes on top of which the lipid material was deposited.
