Abstract

Borchers et al. (2002) explored methods for estimating the abundance of closed populations. When that book was being written, a biologist’s puzzled reaction was “What is a closed population?”. In reality, there is no such thing—populations only appear closed if you look at them for a short enough time period. Look at them for longer and they will change: animals will be born, age, grow, die and move. Despite this, there are many publications devoted to closed population abundance estimation methods.
