Most of the chapters in this book are relevant to urban areas to at least some extent and the geological characteristics of urban areas are usually broadly similar to those of nearby non-urban settings. However, urban areas are extreme cases where human activities have the greatest impacts on the local environment, and environmental processes can affect the greatest numbers of people. There is thus good reason to give them separate attention. © 2006 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
