The medical guidance provided to patients and the related determination to allow individuals to fly nonurgently in a commercial aircraft is a complex decision. The medical literature is quite robust in many areas of aviation medicine, including military applications and rotary-wing civilian aeromedical evacuations. Unfortunately, in this area of aviation medicine, the medical literature supporting this medical decision making is surprisingly limited; consequently, nonevidence-based recommendations and expert opinion are commonly encountered and frequently used by patients, travel specialists, airlines, and physicians.
