Abstract

Dad's Story: Clinical Vignette John was an only child to his parents who had high expectations for him as he grew up. John came from a fairly privileged family; he went to good schools when young and did very well in university. In keeping with his family's wishes, he went to law school where he graduated with highest distinction. He aspired to follow the footsteps of his father and grandfather who were both eminent lawyers. They were proud to have him carry forward the family legacy. Growing up, John excelled in almost everything he did. He played sports competitively, did a lot of community work, and joined various overseas volunteer organizations ; it was anticipated that he would be very successful. He continued to shine throughout his adulthood outside of his academic prowess by assisting his mother in fund-raising organizations and was very compassionate towards female equality and supporting females in the profession of law. When he met Katie during law school, it appeared he had found the perfect partner. Together, they were a young power couple who had a lot of dreams and aspirations for themselves, including the creation of a family.
