This paper proposes a human-centered engagement model for developing interactive media technology. The human-centered engagement model builds on previous interaction models for publicly located ambient displays. It is designed from ethnographic observation with the aim of informing technological innovation from the perspective of the user. The model will be presented along with technological mechanisms to detect human behavior with the aim of responsive media technology development. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
