Recent developments in analytical instrumentation, combined with the demonstrated utility of the rare earth elements (REE) as tracers in natural waters, have encouraged a large number of researchers to attempt low-level REE determinations in natural waters. However, there are few, if any, sufficiently detailed guides available that outline the essential requirements for producing reliable REE data for natural waters. In this chapter we attempt to provide such a guide, aimed primarily at those researchers considering entering this research area for the first time.
